Maleficent: A Cinematic Marvel
Angelina Jolie’s performance as
Maleficent is touching and frightful and wickedly good. Isobelle Molloy and
Ella Purnell as the younger Maleficent are delightful. Elle Fanning and Vivienne
Jolie-Pitt as Aurora are endearing. Lesley Manville, Imelda Staunton, and Juno
Temple as the three fairies who care for young Aurora, bring enough comic
relief to keep this feature film from becoming too frightening for the little
ones.
In the end, Maleficent is a
different type of love story. Although sweet at times, the twists to this
classic borrows just enough from the dark side of the original Brothers Grimm
fairy tale to keep it from becoming too predictably maudlin. Directed by Robert
Stromberg, Maleficent casts a spell that enchants, and receives four out of five stars.
