Captain America: An American Hero Finds His Place

Captain America: The Winter Soldier is the Marvel Studios sequel to the successful Captain America: The First Avenger (2011). Bookending The Avengers (2012) and Thor: The Dark World (2013), in addition to being a sequel to the earlier Captain America release, Captain America: The Winter Soldier is also an installment of the good versus evil saga, which is central to Marvel Studio productions. Lacking the eye-candy appeal of the iconic cast of superheroes which appear in The Avengers and the intergalactic drama of Thor, Captain America: The Winter Soldier finds its niche by focusing on the portrait of the individual spirit and how the unshakeable conviction of one man can save the world.
If you compare this movie to The Avengers, you will be probably be disappointed. Despite being engineered in a laboratory to be a super soldier, many Avenger movie fans might fail to understand how Captain America, who lacks the godlike powers of Thor or the unfathomable strength of The Hulk or even the brilliance of Tony Stark aka Iron Man and only possessed of superhuman strength, speed, and agility, could come to lead the hodge-podge of high profile powerful superheroes that pack The Avengers movie. However, Captain American is a star in his own right. Captain America: The Winter Soldier must be understood in context of the comic book mythology originally developed by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby, which presents the American portrait of a super patriotic leader.
In Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Steve Rogers aka Captain America (Chris Evans) is reunited with S.H.I.E.L.D. Director Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), S.H.I.E.L.D. agents Jasper Sitwell (Maximiliano Hernandez), and Natasha Romanoff aka The Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson). As the plot unfolds, we learn that since World War II a shadow organization called Hydra has infiltrated and has been covertly causing worldwide chaos while operating within the ranks of S.H.I.E.L.D. After an elaborate but failed assassination attempt on S.H.I.E.L.D. Director Fury’s life, Fury manages to slip Steve Rogers a portable drive containing information about a top secret initiative and warns Rogers to trust no one. Recruiting help from agent Romanoff, Rogers uncovers a secret plan to eliminate millions of people who have the potential to oppose and disrupt Hydra’s quest for world domination. Even as Rogers is branded a traitor for refusing to disclose this information to a S.H.I.E.L.D. superior, Rogers enlists additional aid from retired pararescueman Sam Wilson aka Falcon (Anthony Mack). Against overwhelming odds, the underdog team of Captain America, The Black Widow, and Falcon battle to thwart Hydra's plans and save millions while defending American liberty and freedom.
The movie adeptly explores the dual nature of many of the movie’s characters, including Fury, The Black Widow, S.H.I.E.L.D.’s S.T.R.I.K.E. operative Brock Rumlow (Frank Grillo), and senior S.H.I.E.L.D. official Alexander Pierce (Robert Redford). In the midst of this turmoil, Captain America remains the reliable constant in a world spinning off its moral compass. Although Captain America sports a sleek, black mod costume, the old fashion values of patriotism, courage, doggedness, loyalty, and integrity still drive the heart of this character. Steve Rogers is someone who doesn’t compromise his core values and abandons friends, even when his own life is at stake. These are the heroic values that make Steve Rogers aka Captain America a truly super soldier, a truly decent guy, and a truly super leader.
The movie also stars Sebastian Stan as the Winter Soldier, Cobie Smulders as Maria Hill, Emily VanCamp as Sharon Carter/Agent 13, and Hayley Atwell as Peggy Carter. Additionally Toby Jones appears as Arnim Zola and Garry Shandling as Senator Stern. Captain America: The Winter Soldier was directed by Anthony Russo and Joe Russo. The script was written by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely. Kevin Feige produced the film. For its fine acting performances, action sequences, story development, and directing, Captain America: The Winter Soldier triumphs at the box office with four out of five stars.

The Elements of Creative and Expressive Artistry: A Philosophy for Creating Everything Artistic is an all-artist guide which identifies the nine root elements common to all artistic fields and explains their significance in creating expressive art. This book is for adult and young adult performers, writers, and visual artists. The Elements of Creative and Expressive Artistry uses hundreds of relevant examples, citations, and quotations from prominent art professionals, philosophers, scientists, past and present, to support over 40 chapters. Through warm and insightful narrative, Hemphill offers advice from painters, sculptors, dancers, choreographers, actors, film directors, musicians, teachers, psychologists, scientists, philosophers, and critics, writing on all forms of art, including visual arts, literary arts, dramatic arts, musical arts, dance arts, and hybrid art forms. For advanced artists, critics, and teachers looking to understand artistic depth and nuance, The Elements of Creative and Expressive Artistry presents 36 additional elements branching from the nine root elements and suggests other avenues for artistic investigation and development. Although mainly written for the artist and arts professional, the non-artist who has a general love for art will also gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of art.
